How to Create a Family-Friendly Living Room

The family living room is the heart of almost every home. It’s where you’ll see your children take their first steps, where you’ll spend Christmas together, and where you’ll fall asleep watching TV together on a Saturday evening. It’s the place where memories are made. Because of this, it’s vital that you take time and care to design yours for exactly this purpose. If you get it right, you’ll be left with a space that’s warm, cosy, and suits every member of your family. To help you with this, here are a few tips.

Make Sure That It’s Safe

If you’ve got young children in your home, then it’s important that you spend some time childproofing the room and making sure that it’s safe. After all, you can’t watch your child’s every move to make sure that they’re not up to mischief. Unfortunately, there will likely be a lot more hazards than you first thought, so it’s critical that you take your time with this. Common dangers include power sockets, blind cords, and furniture with sharp corners.

Provide Play And Work Space

Unless you have a separate room for your children to play or do their homework in, then it’s sensible to provide space in your living room for them to do this. You could add a desk in the corner of the room for working and drawing, and mark out a section for your children to play with their toys. This way, everyone can stay together and still interact, even if you are all doing something different.

Don’t Forget The TV

Whether you like it or not, we live in a technological age, which means that watching the TV together has become an incredibly popular family activity. Because of this, it’s important that you find a practical and stylish TV stand for the living room. It should be a low unit, so as to not overwhelm the space, but it should have drawers or cupboards, to store movies and computer games. You could also opt for a similar colour to your other furniture, to create a unified look.

Add Plenty Of Storage

When you live in a family home, you can never have too much storage. After all, you need to put everyone’s belongings somewhere, or the place will end up looking cluttered and cramped. This means that you need to find creative ways to add extra space to your living room. A great way to do this is to buy furniture that can also be used to store things, like a TV stand with cupboards or an ottoman that you can open and put things inside.

Keep It Open Plan

An open plan design is perfect for family living, as it allows easier socialising and interacting. It means that you can cook dinner in the kitchen, while also talking to and keeping an eye on your little ones while they’re watching the television. This also provides plenty of space for your kids to roam around and play. Just make sure that you allocate zones for eating, lounging, cooking, and working, or everyone could end up under each other’s feet.
