How did I discover Happy Mallows? I can't remember? It was a recent find, I think we followed each other on Instagram, but I'm so glad we've found them.
The kids and me love a marshmallow and I've been desperate to try out new flavours - they'll also be great on a camping trip.
I'll introduce you to Sam Humphrey, an average 21 year old guy (in his own words) from East Sussex, who's always wanted to own his own business. So, in November last year he had the idea of making and selling assorted fun and tasty flavours of gourmet marshmallows.
He researched online at how to make marshmallows and from there - went to the supermarket to get all the ingredients. Within 3 months of making his first batch he'd roughly made 120-140 trays worth of marshmallows, trying and testing different flavours to get the tastiest outcomes. From all this trial and error he's created some truly outstanding marshmallow flavours.
Happy Vanilla
Cocky Coffee
Sweetly Salted Caramel
Lively Lemon Meringue Pie
Bakewell Tart
Mighyt Mint Choc
Perfect Peaches n' Cream
Cheeky Cinnamon Churros
and finally the Comfort Clouds
The whole branding side of the business is based on the concept that all the marshmallows sold are the 'Happy Mallows' and as you can see from their names they all have there own individual personalities.
There are no artificial preservatives in the marshmallows and they are all mainly gluten free and dairy free apart from one flavour.
Lucky us, we got to taste four flavours:
My main tasters were my girls (ages 9 and 10) these are their own opinions.
Sweetly Salted Caramel
The first to get the taste test was Sweetly Salted Caramel - "it felt bouncy and soft" - "it tastes like butterbeer" (yep, they're big Harry Potter fans) - "it has a nice caramel taste."
Cheeky Cinnamon Churros
Next Cheeky Cinnamon Churros - "it's sugary like an actual doughnut" - "mmmm, good cinnamon flavour" - "tastes just like churros from a festival."
Happy Vanilla
Happy Vanilla - "I would marry this marshmallow" - (10.5 out of 10) - "it's so soft and squashy" - "it tastes like vanilla ice cream."
Lively Lemon Meringue Pie
Lastly Lively Lemon Meringue Pie - "it is lovely and lemony" - "it's a bit sharp" - "it actually tastes like the real thing" - I get in on the act and almost finish the whole bag whilst nobody is looking. My absolute favourite! These have lemon curd running through them and meringue pieces.
Toastability
Our next mission was to test their toastability over a camp fire. The vanilla and salted caramel toasted brilliantly - the cinnamon churros melted a bit too quickly and the lemon meringue toasted really nicely - sorry there weren't many left - Mummy clearly has a problem!
Check out the Happy Mallows shop - I will be buying more in the future and can't wait to taste some other flavours.
